About Tony Gibson's new job!

Arrow11
  • I guess there's a report out there that says Tony Gibson will remain with WVU as some sort of athletic director. Honestly, this was news to me until someone from WVU reached out to me this morning -- important distinction in that order as opposed to the other way around. The response to this revelation puzzled and bothered those people.

That report is "beyond 100 percent not true" as well as "the furthest thing from the truth."

Last I heard, Neal Brown has not spoken to the WVU assistants. Any reported or presumed plan for any of the assistants, including Gibson, is rooted in fiction.

  • Thanks for clearing that up Mike ,,, I guess we all should be reminded that the Internet is LOADED with fiction.

Mike, appreciate the reporting! (this could have been premium content)

I expect Tony to act in his own rational self-interest, which is what I expect Lyons to do as well. What I'd like to know is if Brown will have a full $3.5 million for his staff whether or not that includes Gibson.

Additionally, why has no one reported on Brown's expectations for facility renovations? Is the locker room project not even slated for this off season!? Wouldn't Brown have used leverage to get promises on a full redevelopment of the Silver Lot/IPF?!

Give the man time. He hasn't been on campus for a full week yet.

  • seems odd he hasn't even spoken to any asst coaches yet. Unless he isn't keeping any I do hope he keeps the recruiting Cord.
to give some stability. but then again he has been a Head coach, yes at a smaller Troy , but I'm sure he has athletes that he has seen and recruited that was bigger then Troy that might now consider WVU. Hopefully he steps Recruiting up

Haven't had a chance to talk to him yet. That'll come up tomorrow morning in the presser, I'm sure. I don't know what he can do as far as demands about SL/IPF.

Not really. He's bringing in a new staff, comprised mostly of people he knows and has worked with previously. He's never worked with any of WVU's current staff. And if Brown is as smart as it seems so far, his contract imposes no limitations on him, like forcing him to hire someone not of his own choosing.

Why would he sign a contract only to be set up for failure? He can't afford to lose recruits out in years 3 or 4 of his contract because the AD is pulling a Pastilong.

    "Pulling a Pastilong"

Would Pastilong have hired Neal Brown?

  • That must be MhVer3's official sports news twitter account. That's the same "source" that said Wright was now very interested in WVU isn't it?

Some dude that calls himself a Sports Journalist probably working out of his mother's basement in Dunbar.

First of all thanks Mike for clearing up what appeared false.

As for pulling a Pastiiong--Again there are facility upgrades in the works for a revamped Puskar Center.
Do we even know if Dana or Brown has complained about the IPF? Seriously, I recall Dana talking about meeting space, and practice field and both were addressed; I don't recall him saying anything about the IPF.
Perhaps Brown A) Isn't as concerned as our fans or B) has had discussions beforehand that we aren't aware of.

  • Just an FYI I heard this morning which plays into the $3.5mm pool. UGA was paying their OC about $900k per. Tennessee came and offered $1.5mm per to a not only same conference but same division opponent. UGA was the 14th highest scorIng team last year. UG.a said no.

Glad to hear they didn’t cave to the foolishness.

Isn't that how all these message boards are run.

  • Not me-not my news feed. That would be a huge blunder by WVU. I’m hearing TG has been offered Co-DC by brown and the job of recruiting director but that Gibson hasn’t accepted yet.

  • Your exactly right. The old staff done absolutely nothing but recruiting... but nothing to show for it. We’ve had the best talent that’s been there in years and the NFL draft proves that.

This goes over WVU's upgrade plan

    Yup
    No search
    No interviews

"He's paid his dues and is a wonderful West Virginian"
"Just overlook the whole Michigan fiasco"

Pastilong's legacy is that he's been gone for nearly a decade and we'll likely still be talking about him in another 5 years. Well, unless construction speeds up or else Brown delivers a Big12 title.

He will run into the same resistance that every other coach has run into about those 2 big huge ants in the room that every coach has always complained about.

I heard he was bringing new staff including his own DC.
may gibbs gets put in as co-dc but more of a positions coach?

The fact is that last 2 years the defense has given up big games.

Seems odd based on your tweets that he would be fired immediately, then fired after Bowl game....that he would now be kept as DC and given additional responsibility of recruiting director

    but yeah....

  • Edit: Apparently this is related to the now de-bunked runor.

(1/9/19, 10:04 A.M.) GIBSON DOES NOT HAVE A NEW JOB WITH WVU

2nd Edit - Apparently this is true and someone from WVU tried to put the kibosh on it earlier by saying it wasn't true?! Very confusing.

    3rd Edit: Bye Felicia.
